Recent research shows that stammering (stuttering) is a neurodevelopmental condition, linked to how the brain coordinates speech timing and movement. Brain imaging studies consistently show differences in white matter connections, particularly in pathways linking language and motor regions, which can affect speech fluency.

Genetics is now one of the strongest areas of evidence. Large-scale studies involving over a million individuals have identified dozens of genes and genetic regions associated with stuttering. This helps explain why it often runs in families and confirms a strong biological basis. These findings also suggest overlap with other neuro developmental traits, reinforcing that stammering is not simply behavioural.

Current research highlights that stammering is multifactorial. Brain development, genetics, language demands, and environment all interact. Emotional factors such as anxiety do not cause stammering, but they can increase its severity in certain situations.


Strategies for parents

Importantly, treatment approaches are evolving. Rather than focusing only on fluency, modern approaches emphasise confidence, communication skills, and reducing pressure, alongside early support to improve outcomes.

  • Speak slowly and calmly
  • Let your child finish without interrupting
  • Reduce time pressure in conversations
  • Focus on what they say, not how they say it
  • Keep communication relaxed and positive
  • Seek a speech and language therapist if needed
